I go to Cal Maritime Academy as a senior majoring in mechanical/marine engineering and minoring in business. It is located in Vallejo, which is a waterfront city in Solano County, California.
I am blessed to have been allowed to attend such a university and have recently looked for ways to give back to the community that has helped me grow in faith and as a person.
According to census.gov, the poverty rate is about 14.1% in Vallejo and is rising due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many people have lost their jobs and have been struggling to bring income to provide for themselves and their families. Other cities are suffering as well and it is hard for me to sit still.
Through the Society of St. Vincent De Paul, I am proud to announce that I will be a part of the 12th Annual Friends of the Poor Virtual 5K Walk/Run. This event will be held anytime/anywhere from September 9th to October 9th.
So, here is my request: I would like to challenge you to run/walk with a purpose this month. In my case, I will be running a 5K and hopefully a 10K in honor of this event (note the AQI before you run…because of fire season, there might be times during the day that it is unhealthy to go outside to exercise).
If you made it this far, I would like to take a moment to appreciate you. Now let’s go out there and run/walk!
The Friends of the Poor® Walk/Run is a national event coordinated by the Development Team at the National
Council of the United States Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
